Stephen of Kent

SINGER | SONGWRITER | ARTIST

Stephen of Kent is a “Born Free” South African multidisciplinary singer/songwriter. He draws inspiration from the likes of Childish Gambino, Black Coffee, Bon Iver, Frank Ocean and The XX He references the music that he was raised on such as Outkast, Prince, Pink Floyd, TKZEE and Kanye West.

Stephen has built upon his diverse pastiche of contemporary music through the establishment of what he coins, “Future Kwaito”. It is a variant of house music featuring the use of African sounds and samples. Typically, at a slower tempo range than other styles of house music, Kwaito often contains catchy melodic and percussive loop samples, deep bass lines and vocals. The sound has a visual representation and aesthetics of freedom and lifestyle in modern South Africa. Kent’s music aims to explore the human condition and express it in its rawest form to expand both local and international cultural ideas. He makes uses of unconventional melodies and cadences and has the rare gift of self-producing elements found in Synth Pop and Tech music frequently juxtaposed with live instrumentation and analog synthesizers
